July 16, 2015.

Daily Reading: Proverbs 13

Background: Proverbs 11-12.

Concepts and Connections.

Chapter 13

Proverbs: Chapter 13 continues in like fashion of the previous few chapters, laying out wisdom in proverbs of couplets. Here we find some themes that are beginning to reoccur throughout the proverbs. These themes include listening to a father’s wisdom, being diligent in work, the wisdom in listening to advice, and the ultimate triumph of righteousness and wisdom over wickedness and foolishness.  Some new concepts are also introduced in this chapter, some of which will become reoccurring themes as we travel forward in the proverbs. Such things include the wisdom in keeping silent (v. 3), the threat that comes with riches (v. 8), the injustice that infects society (v. 23) and the wisdom of discipline for children (v. 24). Other concepts of note found in this chapter include: the reward of hard work (v. 4), humility in riches (v. 7), the folly of insolence (v. 10), slow and steady income will be better established than a fast payout (v. 11), abiding in the word of God brings reward and avoids destruction (v. 13), fools tend to flaunt their foolishness (v. 16), leaving prosperity for your children and grandchildren (v. 22), child discipline (v. 24) and the provision for the righteous (v. 25).

Tomorrow’s Reading: Ezekiel 25-30.
